There are now over 7000 patients looked after by four doctors and usually three or four GP registrars, supported by a team of five practice nurses. The practice currently works from two separate sites. Madeley Surgery was converted from a farm house in the early 1980s. There have been three major extensions and refurbishments to provide six consulting rooms, two treatment rooms, dispensary and teaching facilities. Extra space was created to house our district nurses, physiotherapists, counsellors and outside clinics based at the Surgery.
Baldwins Gate is a branch Surgery approximately 5 miles from Madeley. It is a 1930s semi-detached house in the centre of the village. It is open for five mornings per week providing doctor surgeries, nurse surgeries, dispensary and a blood testing service.
The practice falls within North Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Clinical Commissioning Group. The main local hospital is the University Hospital of North Midlands. Keele Medical School, which is within the practice area, opened in 2004.
All GP Practices are required to declare the mean earnings (eg average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each Practice. The average pay for GPs working in Madeley Practice in the 2019/20 financial year was £113,347 before tax and national insurance. This is for three full-time GPs who worked in the Practice for more than six months.

The GPs are supported by a practice nurse team. Care of many conditions such as asthma, hypertension and contraception is now provided by our nurses working to protocols. The practice nurse team consists of four nurses, of whom one is a Nurse practitioner, supported by a health care assistant. The Nurse Practitioners are allowed to prescribe to patients where appropriate to their training. the nurses have their own areas of expertise and it is for this reason that we do not currently accept booking of nurse appointments on-line.
The nurses each have their own continuing personal development plan. As a team they meet monthly to discuss clinical issues. They also meet monthly with the district nurses to review areas of work which overlap, and monthly with the doctors to discuss clinical issues and practice development.
The Practice Manager is Mrs Kate Le Brun. Miss Chloe Leech is the Assistant Practice Manager. There is a team of receptionists. They assist patients to access the most appropriate doctor or healthcare professional to meet their needs. They also have other specific duties such as scanning documents into patients’ records. The office team provide clerical support to doctors and nurses.
In dispensary there are four dispensary staff based at Madeley Practice who provide acute and repeat prescriptions to dispensing patients. The dispensary is signed up to the new Quality Dispensing Scheme and as such is subject to rigorous annual inspection by a Pharmacy Advisor from NHS England.
Teaching (Training and Education)
The practice encourages and supports all staff to participate in regular training and fulfill their personal development plans. The practice has trained GP registrars for over 20 years. Currently the practice has three active trainers and GP registrars undertaking training in the practice at any one time. The practice is also approved to take GP returners. Since 2005 the practice has been actively involved in training of medical students from Keele Medical School. The GPs have also supported the development of the practice nurses and the healthcare assistant in the practice. The practice nurses do from time to time supervise student nurses in their training. Within the practice we hold regular weekly clinical meetings and monthly doctor and practice nurse clinical meetings.
The practice operates on EMIS software system at both Madeley and Baldwins Gate Surgeries, so that there is only one database of patient records. EMIS is the most widely used GP software system.
The practice is paper-light which means that, for example, hospital blood results are transferred electronically directly into patient records and hospital letters are scanned at the Surgery onto records. Patient paper records are kept in safe storage and are still available if required.
EMIS allows effective audit of patient care and practice activity to ensure we achieve high standards of care. The practice is able to offer patients the ability to book and cancel appointments and request repeat prescriptions on-line. An electronic booking in system operates at Madeley Practice. We are able to transfer and receive patient records electronically from other GP practices.
